Powers of Congress
Article I
Section 8
1) Lay and collect taxes. (They can only be used for three things: pay the debts, defense, general welfare)
2) Borrow money.
3) Regulate commerce between States and with foreign countries.
4) Establish a rule of naturalization.
5) Establish laws on bankruptcy.
6) Coin money & regulate the value of foreign coin, establish punishment for counterfeiting.
7) Fix a standard of weights and measures.
8) Establish post offices and post roads
9) Secure patents and copyrights (to promote the progress of science)
10) Constitute district and appeals courts.
11) Define and punish for piracy, make rules about captures on land and water, define and punish for felonies overseas
12) Declare War
13) Raise and support an army, navy, and the Militia
14) Make rules/regulations over Washington D.C., forts, dock-Yards, and US territories
15) Make all laws for the previously mentioned 14 powers.
16) Power of impeachment (A1S2C5 & A1S3C6)
17) Count electoral college votes (A2S1C3)
18) Approve all treaties (A2S2C2)
19) Admit a state into the union (A4S3C1)
20) Propose amendments or call a convention of States (A5)
